John F. “Sandy” Smith is the founding Chair of the Stanford Institute for Research in the Social Sciences, or IRiSS.
IRiSS trains new generations of social scientists in the most advanced and innovative research methods, and provides them with a platform for collaboration across such disciplines as anthropology, economics, political science, sociology, communication and psychology, as well as the university's professional schools. It hosts five research centers that focus on some of the most pressing social issues of the modern era, including Big Data, poverty and inequality, and population studies. It also promotes the study of the impact of philanthropy, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) and government agencies, democratic stability and the study of American elections. John F. “Sandy” Smith of Womble Carlyle is a graduate of Stanford University in Palo Alto and served as a member of the Stanford University Board of Trustees. He earned his law degree from Duke University School of Law. He also holds a Master of Business Administration from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. As a Senior Partner of Womble Carlyle's Corporate and Securities practice, John F. “Sandy” Smith is considered one of the firm’s leading deal makers. He works out of Womble Carlyle’s Atlanta office and is instrumental in the opening of the firm’s Silicon Valley office.
